The College Student's Guide to Breathing New Life IntoYour Old Smartphone

The College Student's Guide to Breathing New Life IntoYour Old Smartphone

When you first get a smartphone, there's a short period where you can't stop grinning as you watchyour pocket computer effortlessly whiz through tasks and games. While this feeling is exhilarating, it is usually short-lived, as phones tend to become slower as you use them. Soon, you're struggling to get the simplest of things done, and the joy of using your phone turns into a chore. This doesn't happen overnight, but there's a reason why so many people are now replacing their phones every year or two.
As a college student, I can't keep upgrading my phone just to get a decent experience when using the device, and you shouldn't have to either. The good news is that with a little effort, you can bring your phone up to speed so you don't need to start coming up with arguments to convince your parents to buy a new phone just yet.
Since almost all the college students I've come across are also using Android devices, this guide focuses on just that platform. Of course, these are tips that any Android user will find helpful, so no matter who you are, if you phone has been slowing down, these tips should help.
Cut down on unwanted apps
Head over to Settings > Apps (or Application Manager). Then swipe to the Running tab and have a look at which apps are consuming most of your storage. Apps like Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp are the usual culprits. Try to get rid of them by using alternatives where possible; for example, you can use Facebook Lite instead of Facebook.
Sometimes, the default apps for things like Contacts and Gallery can be pretty bad as well - each manufacturer has its own custom version for these apps, and some can be pretty bad - but there are several good replacements that you can find on the App Store, such as Contacts+ and Quikpic Gallery.
quickpic_gallery.jpg
You can't uninstall the default applications, but you can disable them, which should also help performance a little. To do this, first you need to go to Settings > Apps. Then find the app you want to disable, tap on it to open up its settings, and tap the Disable button. Just be careful not to disable any important processes though, as they might prevent the proper functioning of your phone The Golden rule to remember is - if you don't understand the name, just leave it alone!
Disabling prevents the app from running in the background, thus freeing up RAM, and will also hide it from your app drawer. Re-enabling disabled apps is also easily done. Just go back to the disabled app in the Application Manager and tap the Enable button.
More advanced options
While these steps should make a difference, you can't disable all the apps on your phone - the option is not permitted or certain apps by the device makers. To get around this, you'll need to root your phone.
Rooting your phone provides you with the permissions required to customise your phone at a much deeper level than usual. With root access, you can override the default restrictions set by your manufacturer, and truly set up your phone in your way.
Now, some manufacturers don't approve of this, and will void your warranty if you root the phone. But that's becoming less common now, as brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi (which allow you to root your phone) are growing in popularity.
You can root your phone in several ways, but one of the simplest ways is to use a root toolkit, such asKingo Root. The specifics all vary for different devices, so you'll need to read the detailed tutorials to find the exact steps for your phone, as well as the software you'll need for the process.

After rooting your phone, you can take advantage of the added permissions and use these powerful apps to make your phone quicker. Make sure to backup all your important data like contacts (which should ideally be automatically backed onto Google's cloud), messages, photos, WhatsApp archives and other app data before rooting your phone.
SuperSU
SuperSU
is an advanced permissions manager that monitors which apps request root access to the phone, and provides you with the ability to grant or deny these requests. Basically, once your phone is rooted, apps get access to a very deep level of settings on the device.
This can be potentially harmful to your phone, and that's where SuperSU comes in handy. It puts the full control back in your hands, and for this reason, the app is a must for any root user; so much so that it usually comes pre-installed with many rootkits. SuperSU won't necessarily make your phone faster, but it will make it safer for you to use the other tools.
supersu.jpg
Titanium Backup
Titanium Backup
and its Pro version are among the most popular root apps. They allow you to uninstall any app on your phone and remove bloatware. All those apps you could only disable, not uninstall? They're a thing of the past once you have Titanium Backup installed.
You also have the option to backup apps to your PC before removing them, so they can be restored to your phone if required. With Titanium Backup, you can get rid of all unwanted apps, which should free up space on your phone and improve your phone's performance.
This may come in handy if you're running out of storage space on your phone, and want to get rid of some annoying apps. Also, if you don't want to pay for the Pro version, there are several alternatives on the Play Store such as System App Remover, which offer similar functionality for free.
titanium_backup_pro.jpg
Greenify
Greenify
monitors your phone for apps that consume excessive system resources in the background and hibernates them. This prevents apps such as Facebook from repeatedly waking your phone in the background, saving a lot of battery and improving performance.
There are also options to select apps you want to hibernate, as well as a nifty feature that lets you assign a shortcut to hibernate all apps in the background and put your phone to sleep. If you're able to habituate yourself to using that button rather than hitting the power/ sleep button every time, then you may get a noticeable bump in your phone's battery life.

Instagram opens up to advertisers worldwide

Instagram opens up to advertisers worldwide

Instagram opened its platform to most advertisers across the globe on Wednesday as the photo-sharing app seeks to make more money and compete with popular rivals such as Snapchat.

Ads, previously available only in eight countries, will debut in more than 20 others including Italy, Spain and India, Instagram said. More than 200 countries will have ads by Sept. 30.
With 300 million monthly active users, Instagram has a key advantage over rivals because parent Facebook Inc's vast trove of consumer data allows it to target audiences more accurately, a major selling point for advertisers.
"It would have taken us years to build some of this technology without Facebook. We can take advantage of years of experience," James Quarles, global head of business and brand development at Instagram, said in an interview last week.
But users who have grown comfortable with mostly ad-free Instagram feeds of photos from people they follow may rebel. For the past two years, Instagram has only allowed ads by certain brands, such as Victoria's Secret and Old Navy.
Until Wednesday, Instagram ads had only been available in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Germany, France and Brazil.
A sponsored ad on Instagram over the weekend said more ads would be coming soon, but did not specify when. Many users expressed concern, said Debra Aho Williamson, social media analyst at eMarketer, noting that the changes need to be rolled out slowly.
Advertisers have been clamoring for the chance to get on the increasingly popular app to tap its user base of teenagers to young adults, and its ability to leverage data from Facebook, the world's largest social network with 1.5 billion users.
Facebook, which bought Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion, dominates mobile advertising, with more than 75% of its $3.8 billion ad revenue coming from phones.
Instagram ad revenue is projected to reach $1.5 billion in 2016, according to eMarketer, a research firm, and nearly double by 2017 to $2.8 billion.
Instagram has been working to provide more creative options for advertisers. In addition to its signature square, new layout options introduced last month for pictures and videos allow more design flexibility.
The new video formats are also an effort to attract film producers as the layout is ideal for movie trailers and premieres, Quarles said.
"Instagram is a platform we know our targets are engaging the most on and it's more appealing on that platform," said Monique Lemus, director of media buying at The Media Kitchen, an ad buying agency.

Digitised Version of Mahatma Gandhi's Collected Works Launched

Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday launched the electronic version of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi (CWMG), which document the leader's life from 1884 till his demise on January 30, 1948.
The minister also announced that the Hindi version of CWMG would be digitised soon.
"The intrinsic and heritage value of the e-CWMG project had the collaboration and partnership of institutions that have been founded and nurtured by Gandhiji himself," said Jaitley on the occasion.
"This digitised version of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi would be instrumental in preserving the valuable national heritage and disseminating it for all of humankind."
The event that was organised at the Gandhi Peace Foundation was also attended by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and newly-appointed secretary Sunil Arora.
Hailing Gandhiji as a true visionary, whose thought process touched various facets of human life, Jaitley said Gandhiji's understanding of a wide range of issues enabled the creation of a moral environment which in the long run forced the British to leave India.
His writings are inspirational in weaving humanity together. The documentation of his work through an e-version is truly inspirational for followers on the e-platform. At the same time it is a truly collectors' item available to all followers of Gandhiji's philosophy, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Arora said that in order to preserve the heritage of Gandhiji and make it available to future generations, publications division had taken up the task of preparing the e-version of the 100 volumes of CWMG in 2011.
"In order to maintain the authenticity of this important work, it was decided to have a facsimile-based version in electronic form for preservation. It was decided to make it into a searchable master copy in PDF format," he said.
The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi took about 38 years in the making (1956-1994). They are a series of 100 volumes, running into over 55,000 pages, intricately connected across the series, as an integrated whole

Humanoid Robot to Liaise Between International Space Station Crews

Humanoid Robot to Liaise Between

International Space Station Crews

A team of French researchers has developed "an autobiographical memory" for the only robot on the International Space Station (ISS) which will help the robot liaise between the astronauts that change every six months in order to pass on information.
In order for a robot to understand cooperative behaviour, researchers developed a system whereby a human agent can teach their new "Nao" robot new actions through physical demonstration, visual imitation or voice command.
These individual actions are then combined into procedures and stored in the robot's autobiographical memory developed by researchers, thus enabling the robot to reproduce them for other human agents if needed.
"This technological progress could notably be used for operations on the orbiting laboratory," saidsenior researcher Peter Ford Dominey from the Institut cellule souche et cerveau (Inserm/Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1).
Researchers set up this autobiographical memory system to meet the challenge of cooperation between humans and robots, with the humanoid "Robonaut 2" which is now permanently flying aboard the ISS.
Autobiographical memory includes events that were personally experienced, along with their context.
It makes it possible to date and locate memories, and to determine who was present during the event.
With human beings, autobiographical memory helps build an individual's personal history.
The transmission of information on board is essential since crews change every six months.
Researchers are now hoping to test their "Nao" robot in the real conditions of space operations with zero gravity.
They would also like to develop another area of application, assisting the elderly, with the robot this time playing the role of a personal memory aid.
"Robonaut 2" is a humanoid robot resulting from the Robonaut programme, a close collaboration between Nasa and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
A unit was delivered to the ISS in February 2011 to control the robot's operation in weightlessness.
It was designed to assist the work of astronauts in complicated situations, especially during extra-vehicular outings.
The new results were presented at the international symposium on robot and human interactive communication in Kobe, Japan, recently
